Strengths, examples and questions for support.

01

Begin with strengths

Begin with what your child enjoys and how they communicate. Then note the concern that made you seek advice. Describe a recent example, where it happened and what helped. Invite their own perspective when possible.

02

Ask about the local pathway

A GP can explain local autism assessment pathways. Depending on the area and your child’s age, a school or health visitor may help with referral. Ask what information is useful and what support is available while waiting.

03

Keep your observations together

Bring questions rather than trying to calculate a diagnosis from a checklist. Keep reports and dated observations together. Ask who will contact you next and when to follow up.
